BIT's UrbanTrip team wins IJCAI championship title

The UrbanTrip team from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) triumphed in the DSL Track of the Travel Planning Competition at the 34th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) held recently in Montreal, Canada.

Comprising graduate students Tang Yicheng, Leng Xiaoting, and Zhu Jiabao, from the School of Computer Science and Technology, and guided by professors Ruan Sijie, Wang Shuliang, and Yuan Hanning, the team excelled among numerous competitors.

IJCAI, a prestigious Category A conference established in 1969 and held annually, is a leading event in artificial intelligence. The Travel Planning Competition, a key part of the conference, challenges participants to create intelligent journey planning algorithms that optimize sightseeing, dining, and accommodation, while balancing complex constraints with solution efficiency.

The team designed a "Journey Planning Divide-and-Conquer Framework", with the core idea of "refining step by step from the big picture to the details". When people need to plan a trip, this framework first selects appropriate intercity transportation based on time, budget, and preferences, thereby determining the arrival and departure times for the target city and planning the daily itinerary in sequence. This framework can automatically generate feasible, high-quality travel plans under multiple constraints, complex preferences, and limited time, making the journey planning process more intelligent and the results more personalized, which effectively promotes the application of artificial intelligence technology in cultural and tourism scenarios.

The participating members are from the Spatiotemporal Data Intelligence Laboratory of the School of Computer Science and Technology. This competition marks another victory in the field of spatiotemporal data mining at important domestic and international events for the laboratory, following their Grand Prize win at the National College Student Spatial Information Technology Competition in 2024.
